“One more time,” Kay said, glaring at Stavros like he had just kicked her puppy or something. “Call me sweetheart one more time, and I’m breaking something you’ll desperately miss.”

“Look at that. My partners are getting along just as well as I figured they would,” I muttered as Stavros pulled out a chair and took a seat with Kay and me at the table. He raised his hand into the air and snapped his fingers, getting the attention of a young waitress who was about thirty feet down the sidewalk, tending to another table.

“Love, I’ll take a large cup of whatever has the most sugar and caffeine. Preferably, something with some cinnamon in it too.” He smiled in Kay’s direction. “Stavros likes it sweet.”

“Jesus,” Kay groaned. “Are you serious right now?” She looked at me. “This is what you brought me out here for, some knuckle dragging idiot who doesn’t know enough to even exhibit common courtesy?”

“Stavros makes a bad first impression,” I said, shooting my old partner a look. “But he’s a good man, and a good detective.”

“Was,” Stavros said, his voice growing a bit more serious as he answered. “You know I haven’t been in the game for a little while now.”

“The game?” Kay balked. “There it is. That’s your problem right there. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but that’s it. You think this is a game. You don’t take it seriously. I doubt you take anything seriously.”

“You are a bag of fun, aren’t you?” Stavros asked as the waitress set what was probably the sweetest drink anyone had ever ordered in front of the man. Looking up at her, he fished a twenty out of his pocket and handed it to her.

“Andy, I can’t do this,” Kay said, pushing her chair out and starting to stand.

“You can,” I said, touching her hand. “Please. Just give me a second.” I glared at Stavros. “And you.”

“Me?” he asked.

“Turn the bravado down a bit. We’ve got work to do.”

“Whatever you say.” Stavros leaned back in his chair, shrugging and folding his arms over his chest.

“When I was back up north, after my initial partner quit, Stavros and I worked the beat together for almost two years before I got promoted,” I said.

“I got promoted two months after him, but he never lets me live his head start down,” Stavros interjected.

“We worked together well,” I continued. “We got along even better. He’s a good man, and he understands what’s important, even if he doesn’t always come off as such. This hasn’t been the best start to things, but Stavros can help us here, and he’s uniquely qualified to do so.”

“Because you were born into a cult?” Kay asked, sighing as she looked over at the man, a sign that she would at least try to hear him out.

“Not born. Raised. Still, I figured it had to be good for something sooner or later,” Stavros said. He leaned back up in his seat and cleared his throat. “There are different types of cults, but there are three big ones.
